Andrew Barker, BSc, PhD, President |

![]() |
Dr. Andy Barker, a physicist with 29 years experience, has been involved with the design and development of novel optical sensors throughout his career. He was the originator of several patent applications and has authored a number of publications in the area of precise distance measurement. |
|
For the past six years Dr. Barker has worked in a technical consulting capacity for commercial product development with organizations in Canada, USA and Europe. Most recently with Eric Technologies Corporation, where he was a key contributor in development of new technology in vibrational tonometry and with Keralase Ltd. where he assisted in the development of a new laser system for hair removal. While at Virginia Tech, Dr. Barker’s investigation into new applications of laser technology for mechanical testing, led to invention and demonstration of novel system concepts for laser vibration sensing on high speed rotating machinery, and for laser 3D metrology of engineering structures.
From 1973 to 1996, Dr. Barker was engaged by the Sira Group of companies. Initially joining the Optical Systems Division of Sira Ltd., Chislehurst, Kent in the UK as project leader with specific responsibility for the development and evaluation of automatic print inspection equipment based on an optical transform technique. Subsequently he assumed optical system design and project management responsibilities for contract feasibility studies and ensuing development of novel electro-optical equipment for inspection, measurement and display applications. In 1988, Dr. Barker joined Ometron, the manufacturing subsidiary of the Sira Group, as Product Manager, with principal responsibility for technical development of the company’s laser and infrared based products. He was instrumental in creating VPI Sensor (1990), VPI RapidSCAN (1991), SPATE 4000 (1992/3) and VS100 (1993). The VPI and VS100 products are non-contacting vibration sensors based on laser interferometry; SPATE is a non-contacting dynamic stress sen sor based on measurement of thermal emission. The VPI product range earned Ometron the Queen’s Award for Technology in 1992. During the later years of his tenure at Ometron, Dr. Barker was appointed Technical Director, assuming additional executive responsibilities but retaining primary involvement with the detailed design of Ometron’s products which are used by major companies worldwide for applications ranging from automotive and aerospace through domestic and industrial product development to power generation. |
